Myrtle Elizabeth Wilhelm was born on November 24, 1929, in Sauk City, Wisconsin. She married Robert Cushing on June 28, 1953, in Sauk City.
From 1980 to 1989, Myrtle Cushing published several "Cemetery Inscription" books, Volumes 1 to 11. Books also contained a surname index. Of special interest to Franklin Township and Plain, Wisconsin, is Volume 6 which contains cemetery inscriptions for the following cemeteries (some cemeteries were known by more than one name):
Bear Creek Township cemeteries
Franklin Township cemeteries
Spring Green Township cemeteries
The Baraboo News Republic (Baraboo, Wisconsin) explained the cemetery inscription project about 1989:
"Cemetery group nears finishing major chronicle by KEN PRITCHARD, BNR Staff Writer
Cemetery group to end reseaching gravestones.
Terming it a major undertaking - tongue-in-cheek of course - the Sauk County Cemetery Society is on the verge of completing a near-decade of work in chronicling the county's cemeteries. The tenth of eleven volumes in an ambitious project of recording the names and dates of those persons buried in the county has been published and work on the final volume has begun. The series of paper-bound book is titled "Cemetery Inscriptions of Sauk County" - the first volume being published by the society in 1980. "Do you know where your ancestors are?" A new bumper sticker asks that question. If you have your origins in Sauk County, the local members of Wisconsin State Old Cemetery Society are trying to help you locate them.
Carol Sorg of Baraboo, a copier for the local society, said that it is important to know who is buried where, because families often lend family plots to people outside the family. She said society members often work with chalk and tracing paper to extract images from headstones.
Volume I was published in 1980, included the cemeteries in the towns of Honey Creek, Sumpter, Troy and rural Prairie du Sac, and it is sold out.
Volume 2 with Washington and Westfield townships was also popular and is almost gone. Cushing said that copies of Volume I and II are scarce and that if there is demand for the first volume, the society will consider publishing a second printing. She said that there are only limited copies of Volume I and II available.
The Prairie du Sac Cemetery and the two Sauk City cemeteries make up Volume 3. Volume 4 includes the towns of Delton, Fairfield, Greenfield and Merrimac, Ironton, LaValle and Woodland townships are given in Volume 5. Bear Creek, Franklin and Spring Green townships make up Volume 6.
Volume 7 has the cemeteries in Excelsior and Freedom townships; plus parts of Baraboo, Dellona and Reedsburg townships. Volume 8 includes the North and South Divisions and Sections and Sections A through N of Walnut Hill Cemetery, Baraboo. The final book, Volume 11, will complete Walnut Hill Cemetery and include additions and corrections to the previous volumes.
The cemetery society is seeking people to help chronicle Walnut Hill and other cemeteries and burial plots that have not yet been recorded by the society for its booklets. Greenwood Cemetery and St. Peter's Lutheran Cemetery, Reedsburg, are featured in the 1987 edition, Volume 9. This book and the new one just out are available in Gordon Emery's Lighthouse Christian Bookstore in Reedsgburg, at Life Line Christian Bookstore in Baraboo, and by mail from Myrtle Cushing, 809 John Adams St., Sauk City, 53583. Cushing also has Volumes 3 through 9 for sale. Volumes three through seven are $8, volume 8 is $10 and volumes 9 and 10 are $9. There is also a $1 fee for postage and handling. . . ."
